For UK businesses

Locked out of your own website?

Developer stopped replying. Nobody knows who holds the hosting. The site is down, or hacked, or you simply cannot edit your own opening hours. This is a large part of my work, and it is more recoverable than it feels.

Sound familiar?

None of this is unusual

I take on sites I did not build every month. There is no lecture about how it got this way, and nothing here is your fault — most of it comes down to a developer who kept the keys.

  • Your developer has stopped replying, or quietly wound the business down
  • Nobody can tell you who holds the hosting account or the domain
  • You have no admin login, or one that no longer works
  • The site went down and nobody noticed for days
  • You were told the site is 'custom' and only they can edit it
  • Updates have not been run in years and something has finally broken
  • The site was hacked, or Google is showing a warning against it
  • You are paying a monthly fee and cannot work out what it buys

How a rescue runs

Ownership first, repairs second

There is no point fixing a site you do not control. Getting the keys back into your hands comes before anything else.

  1. 01

Find out what you actually own

Domain, hosting, DNS, the WordPress install itself. I trace who controls what and tell you plainly where you stand — including when the news is bad.

  2. 02

    Get you back in control

Recovering admin access, moving the domain into your name, taking over hosting. Much of this can be done without the previous developer's cooperation.

  3. 03

    Stabilise and secure

Backups first, then updates, then whatever is broken. Hacked sites get cleaned and hardened before anything cosmetic happens.

  4. 04

Repair or rebuild — your call

I tell you honestly which is cheaper. Plenty of sites that feel beyond saving need a few hours of work rather than a fresh start.

What you end up with

Every login in your name. The domain and hosting under your control. A site you can edit yourself, running on a standard WordPress install rather than something only one person understands. And, if you want it, monitoring so the next problem gets noticed by software rather than by a customer.

You are then free to keep working with me or not. That is rather the point — a client who stays because they want to is worth more than one who stays because they cannot leave.

FAQs

Questions about rescues

If yours is not here, ask it on the call. You will get a straight answer, including when the answer is no.

5 questions

01My developer has gone silent. Can you take over without them?

Usually, yes. If the domain is registered to you, or you have any billing relationship with the host, there is normally a route back in — registrars and hosts have recovery processes for exactly this. It is harder when everything sits in the developer's own name, which is why I never do that to clients.

02I do not know who hosts my site. Where do we start?

That is a completely normal starting point. Public DNS records, domain registration data and the site's own response headers usually reveal the host and registrar within minutes. You do not need to know anything technical before getting in touch.

03The site has been hacked. What happens?

Backups first, then a clean-up: finding and removing the injected code, closing the way in, and requesting a review if Google has flagged the site. I will also be honest if the install is too far gone to clean safely, because a half-cleaned site gets reinfected.

04Do I have to move hosting to you?

No. I work with whatever you have, including UK hosts. If the hosting is genuinely the problem I will explain why and what moving would cost, but the decision is yours and I am not reselling anyone's hosting.

05How much does a rescue cost?

The diagnosis comes first, and you hear what is wrong before you spend anything substantial. Most recoveries are hourly at €50, and if it turns into a larger job you get a fixed quote before that starts.
